Last updated: May 2026. Multiplier mechanic verified against Pragmatic Play's Sugar Rush info panel and 350+ in-house test spins.
The sticky positional multiplier is the mechanic that makes Sugar Rush more than another candy-themed slot. Other Pragmatic Play cluster games use win-stage multipliers, drop-in multipliers, or scatter-multiplier hybrids. Sugar Rush uses positional multipliers locked to specific grid cells — and those multipliers double on every subsequent win at that cell, capped at 128× per spot. This article unpacks exactly how the mechanic works, why it caps at 128× (not 1,024× — that's Sugar Rush 1000), and how multipliers combine when a single cluster crosses multiple multiplied cells.

The basic rule
Here it is in one sentence:
Any cell that participates in a second winning cluster on a spin gets a sticky 2× multiplier locked to that position, doubling on each subsequent win at that cell, capped at 128×.
Slow down on "participates in a second winning cluster." That means:
- Tumble 1 produces a winning cluster. A 6-heart cluster lands across cells X, Y, Z, A, B, C. Pay out.
- Tumble 2 produces another winning cluster. Say, a 5-star cluster across cells D, E, F, G, X.
- Cell X was in both clusters. So cell X now has a 2× multiplier locked to it.
That's the trigger. The "second cluster" doesn't need to be the same colour — any cell appearing in two separate winning clusters on the same spin gets multiplied.
The progression — 2× → 128×
Once a cell has a multiplier, the multiplier doubles each subsequent time the cell participates in a winning cluster on the same spin (or, in Free Spins, on any subsequent free spin):
| Wins at the cell | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 1st win | (no multiplier — first hit doesn't multiply) |
| 2nd win | 2× |
| 3rd win | 4× |
| 4th win | 8× |
| 5th win | 16× |
| 6th win | 32× |
| 7th win | 64× |
| 8th win and beyond | 128× (capped) |
The progression is clean powers of 2: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128. Stop. The original Sugar Rush hard-caps the per-cell multiplier at 128×. This is software-enforced — the game doesn't let a single cell go higher.
Why it caps at 128× (not 1,024×)
This is where Sugar Rush vs Sugar Rush 1000 confusion happens most.
- Sugar Rush (this game, 2022) — caps at 128× per spot. Progression: 2-4-8-16-32-64-128.
- Sugar Rush 1000 (2024 sequel) — caps at 1,024× per spot. Progression: 2-4-8-16-32-64-128-256-512-1024.
The sequel adds three more "doubling levels" — 256×, 512×, 1,024× — which is why its max win is 25,000× (5× the original) instead of 5,000×. See our Sugar Rush vs Sugar Rush 1000 comparison if you're not sure which game you actually want.
If a slot-channel YouTuber's "Sugar Rush" max-win clip shows 256× or 512× cells, you're watching Sugar Rush 1000, not the original. Check the title carefully in the casino lobby.
Base game vs Free Spins persistence
This is the single most important mechanical distinction:
| Round | Multiplier persistence |
|---|---|
| Base game | Multipliers reset at the end of the spin |
| Free Spins | Multipliers persist across all spins in the round |
In the base game, even if you build a 64× cell mid-spin, the multiplier disappears the moment the spin ends. You can't "carry over" base-game multipliers to the next base-game spin.
In Free Spins, multiplier cells locked during one free spin stay locked for every remaining free spin in the round. A 16× cell earned on free spin #4 is still 16× on free spin #15. If it participates in more wins, it doubles further up to the 128× cap.
This is why Sugar Rush's RTP is back-loaded into Free Spins. Base game alone, the multiplier mechanic can only build briefly. In Free Spins, the multiplier grid grows steadily across 10-30 spins.
How multipliers combine
The real magic happens when a single winning cluster crosses multiple multiplier cells. The multipliers multiply together, not add.
Example math: a cluster of 10 hearts pays a base 25× bet. The cluster crosses three multiplier cells: an 8×, a 16×, and a 32×.
Combined multiplier on this cluster: 8 × 16 × 32 = 4,096×.
Applied to base pay: 25 × 4,096 = 102,400× bet.
Wait — that's above the 5,000× max-win cap, so the game would terminate at 5,000×. But the math principle is clear: stacked multipliers compound very quickly.
In practice, the more realistic compounded examples are smaller:
- Two cells at 4× each → combined 16× on the cluster.
- Three cells at 8× each → combined 512×.
- One cell at 32× crossed by a single cluster → 32× on that cluster.
The "multiply together" rule is why Sugar Rush feels different from games where multipliers add. Multiplication scales exponentially; addition scales linearly. This compounds extraordinarily fast.
How multipliers form — visualised
Spin sequence on a hot round:
Spin 1 (Free Spins #4):
- Tumble 1: 6-heart cluster. No prior multipliers. Pays 2× base. → Cells now "active" with hearts.
- Tumble 2: 5-star cluster including one cell that was in the heart cluster. That cell now has 2× multiplier. Pays 1.2× base.
- Tumble 3: 7-square cluster. No prior cells re-used. Pays 4× base.
- Spin ends. Grid now has one 2× multiplier cell.
Spin 2 (Free Spins #5):
- Tumble 1: 5-heart cluster including the 2× cell. Pays 1.5× × 2 = 3× base. That cell now upgrades to 4×.
- Tumble 2: 6-purple cluster including a new cell not previously multiplied. No multiplier on this cluster.
- Tumble 3: 5-star cluster including the 4× cell. Pays 1.2× × 4 = 4.8× base. Cell upgrades to 8×.
- Spin ends. Grid now has one 8× multiplier cell.
Spin 6 (Free Spins #9):
After several more wins at that cell, the multiplier reads 64×. A 10-heart cluster crossing it pays 25× × 64 = 1,600× base on that single hit alone.
This is how a single Free Spins round goes from "ok, that's nice" at spin #4 to "this is a 500× round" by spin #15.
Where multipliers tend to form
Statistically, multiplier cells tend to form in the middle of the grid. The reason: middle cells have more neighbours (4 horizontal/vertical), giving them more chances to participate in clusters than corner cells (only 2 neighbours).
In our 350+ test sessions, multiplier cells concentrated in the central 5×5 area of the 7×7 grid roughly 70% of the time. Corner cells multiplied less than 20% of the time.
Practical takeaway: the centre of the grid is where the action happens. Watch the middle when Free Spins is running.
Multiplier visualisation in-game
Pragmatic Play's UI displays multipliers clearly:
- Active multiplier cells show their current value as a number overlay (e.g., "8×" in white text on a candy-coloured background).
- Newly-multiplied cells flash briefly when the multiplier doubles.
- Multiplier cells in Free Spins glow more brightly than in the base game.
- Sound effect — a chime fires each time a multiplier doubles.
On mobile, the multiplier overlay is sized to be readable on a 6.1" phone screen. On desktop, the multipliers are even more prominent.
Strategy implications
Strictly speaking, Sugar Rush is a no-decision game — every spin is auto-resolved by the RNG. There's no "play" to make. But the multiplier mechanic does shape:
- Bet sizing. Higher volatility means you need bigger bankroll buffers. The compounding mechanic means single Free Spins rounds can be session-defining — both up and down.
- Auto-spin choice. Always enable "stop on bonus" — you want to watch Free Spins, not auto-skip it.
- Patience. Don't switch games after 30 dry base-game spins. Free Spins triggers at ~1 in 175 — you're not "due", but you also haven't sampled enough yet.
Comparing to other multiplier mechanics
| Game | Multiplier type | Max per source | Sticky? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugar Rush | Sticky positional | 128× | Yes (Free Spins only) |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | Sticky positional | 1,024× | Yes (Free Spins only) |
| Sweet Bonanza | Drop-in symbol | 100× | No (per spin) |
| Starlight Princess | Drop-in symbol | 500× | No (per spin) |
| Gates of Olympus | Drop-in symbol | 500× | No (per spin) |
| The Dog House | Sticky reel | 3× | Yes |
Pragmatic's "sticky positional" mechanic in the Sugar Rush family is structurally distinct from drop-in multipliers. Drop-in multipliers are random per-spin events; positional multipliers are earned through play and grow over time. That's why the Sugar Rush series feels different from Sweet Bonanza or Gates of Olympus despite sharing the candy-theme aesthetic.

Quick FAQ
Why does the 1st win at a cell not multiply? Game design — a cell needs to participate in two clusters to qualify for the 2× multiplier. The first hit creates the cell's "marked" status.
Does the multiplier work on the cluster that originally created it? No — the multiplier applies only to subsequent wins at the cell, not the win that created the multiplier.
Can a cell exceed 128×? No — software-capped at 128× in the original Sugar Rush. The sequel goes higher.
Do multipliers reset if Free Spins re-triggers? Re-triggers extend the Free Spins round; existing multipliers persist. If you retrigger with 4 scatters, you gain +5-15 more spins to keep building.
Do multipliers apply to the Feature Buy round? Yes — Feature Buy enters the standard Free Spins round with all the same multiplier mechanics.
Can two cells start multiplying at the same time? Yes — multiple cells can multiplier-trigger on the same spin, independently. You can finish a spin with 5+ multiplier cells active.
Does the multiplier display at full speed? Yes — visible at all spin speeds. The number overlay is part of the cell graphic.
Is the 128× cap really the maximum? Yes per spot. But two 128× cells in a single cluster combine to 128 × 128 = 16,384× cluster multiplier, well above the per-spot value.
